Self-Love

Self-love is a popular buzzword within the mental health community, but what exactly does it mean to love yourself?

According to Dr. Jeffery Borenstein, self-love “is a state of appreciation for oneself that grows from actions that support our physical, psychological, and spiritual growth.” Some people might struggle with the idea of self-love. Especially if they suffer from a mental health issue, have low self-esteem, or feel self-conscious. Some people might get in their heads thinking that self-love is selfish and that it would be wrong to focus on themselves. Yes, ONLY focusing on yourself and lacking consideration for others is selfish, but taking care of yourself in ways that contribute to positive overall well-being is not.

There are many ways to show yourself love and this Valentine’s Day is a perfect time to start! Here are some examples of ways to show yourself love:

  1. Take yourself out on a date

Taking yourself out on a date can be a wonderful experience. It also does not have to be big or expensive. It can look like trying that new coffee shop that you drive by each day or spending some relaxing quiet time in the bath after the end of a long day.

  1. Spend time in gratitude

Research shows that conscious gratitude increases positive emotions. Spend some time writing down the aspects of your life that you are grateful for. One of my favorite ways to practice gratitude is to spend time thanking my different body parts for all they do for me.

  1. Say yes to something you really want to say yes to

How often do we say yes to something that depletes our energy, time, and resources? This Valentine’s Day, practice saying yes to something that you really want to say yes to. This could look like allowing yourself permission to experience positive emotions and engage in pleasurable activities.

  1. Try a new sweetums flavor in the bedroom

One of the sweetest elements of Sweetums Wipes is the variety of flavors! Trying something new in the bedroom (either alone or with a partner) can be a great way to improve mood and self-esteem. Also, having an orgasm is a plus.

  1. Practice PLEASE

PLEASE (Treat Physical Illness, Avoid Mood Altering Substances, Sleep, and Exercise) is an acronym in Dialectical Behavior Therapy that is designed to maintain a positive physical and emotional well-being. Neglecting yourself when you are sick or ignoring physical pain can lead to mental health issues; giving your body space to heal is crucial. Misusing drugs and alcohol can affect mood, increase depression or anxiety symptoms, and hinder sexual functioning. Getting quality sleep reduces vulnerability to stress and illness. Exercise increases positive hormones, like endorphins, which improve mood and reduce physical pain. Not only does exercise reduce mental health symptoms, but it can also increase libido. Write down ways that you can practice PLEASE and then put them into action.

You are special and unique, which is a fact to be celebrated! How will you show yourself love this Valentine’s Day?
